Outreach – Becoming Apostles

Apostles

Apostleship
Jesus commissioned his followers to: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them .   .  .  [and] teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Mt 28:19-20).  At this point, these eleven disciples became “Apostles” – that is they were “sent” to preach the good news of salvation.

The first apostles commissioned others, who commissioned others, down to the present day.  All of us, as members of the Body of Christ through our baptism, are called to be “apostles.”  We are called to be the “light of the world” and illuminate the world with the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ.

Time and time again, the Church reminds us that all of the members of the Church, not just priests and religious, are called to the apostolate – are called to Evangelize!

“Ordinary” Apostolate
Light of the World promotes living as an apostle in one’s every day life.  We are called to live as Christian witnesses through the examples of our ordinary actions and words.  To those who will listen, we are all also called to share our faith.  We are called to reach out to our family and friends, our co-workers and acquaintances, and to all with whom we come in contact.

Come & See Events
The Kerygmatic Retreat is an especially effective tool to bring people closer to Christ.   Prior to the retreat, it is suggested that  parishioners involved with LOTW hold a friendly (social) event to allow other parishioners to  “come and see” what the LOTW Retreat and Process are all about.

Parish Outreach
When a parish is ready (typically after it is comfortable with the Retreat and a number of Small Faith Communities are running strong), it is recommended that Parish Outreach begins.  Ideally this involves going out in pairs of two to visit and welcome new or inactive parishioners.  It might also include going to others living in the parish boundaries who are not members of the parish.
